Instagram Account Recovery: How to Get Back In

Forgot password, hacked, lost email, disabled or deleted? Instagram's route for each: Forgot password?, instagram.com/hacked, appeals and the selfie video.

How you recover an Instagram account depends on what locked you out. Forgot your password? "On the login screen, below Log in, tap Forgot password?" Hacked, or can't log in at all? Instagram's help center says to "visit www.instagram.com/hacked." A disabled account gets an appeal. A deleted one can't come back: "If your account was deleted, there's no way to restore it," Instagram says.

We read Meta's post on account support (December 4, 2025, updated March 19, 2026) through our server, and Instagram's help center as Google showed it, on October 23, 2026. Instagram's help pages block our reader.

"Instagram account recovery" gets about 40,500 searches a month, and "how to recover instagram account" another 9,900.

How do you recover your Instagram password?

Instagram's help center gives the steps: "On the login screen, below Log in, tap Forgot password?," then "Enter username, email or phone number," and "Tap Continue, and follow the" instructions. Once you're back in, our guide on how to change your Instagram password covers logging out other devices.

What if you were hacked or can't log in?

Start at instagram.com/hacked. "If someone gains access to your account or you're unable to log into your account, visit www.instagram.com/hacked to secure your account," Instagram's help center says. If the login link doesn't work, the help center says you "may be able to request" a security code or support from Instagram.

Meta made this easier in 2025. Its December post says it "expanded recovery methods to include taking an optional selfie video to further verify your identity," and that its systems "recognize the device you usually use and familiar locations better than ever." It also says "we've increased the relative success rate of hacked account recovery by more than 30% in the US and Canada." Our guide on what to do if your Instagram account was hacked goes step by step.

What if you lost access to your email or phone?

Fix the email first. "If you've lost access to your email account, you can try to ask your email provider to help you regain access to it," Instagram's help center says. Many providers have their own recovery route. Once the email works again, Instagram's reset link can reach you.

How do you recover a disabled Instagram account?

Appeal it. "After logging in, follow the on-screen instructions to submit your appeal," Instagram's help center says. Meta's December post says appeals are "now faster and easier, with fewer steps and AI assistance for eligible cases."

Don't wait too long. Guides like e-cabilly's describe "a 180-day countdown to appeal before permanent account deletion" on the suspension notice, so act on it early.

Can you recover a deleted Instagram account?

No. "If your account was deleted, there's no way to restore it," Instagram's help center says. You can create a new account "with the same email address you used before," Instagram says.

Deactivating is different. A deactivated account comes back when you log in again. Our guide on how to deactivate or delete an Instagram account explains both and the 30 days before a deletion is final.

Can Meta's AI assistant help?

In some places. On March 19, 2026, Meta rolled out its Meta AI support assistant, and it "started rolling out the support assistant to people who need help logging into their Facebook and Instagram accounts, starting with select cases in the US and Canada." Meta also added "a new, centralized hub on Facebook and Instagram that brings support tools and options into one place."

Be wary of anyone outside Instagram who offers to recover your account for a fee or asks for your login codes.
