Snap Map: How It Works and How to Use Ghost Mode

Snap Map shows friends who share their location with you. How to share yours, pick who sees it, turn on Ghost Mode, and what stays visible anyway.

Snap Map is the map inside Snapchat that shows where your friends are, if they share their location with you. Sharing is off until you turn it on. "Location sharing on Snap Map is turned off by default," Snapchat says, and you can only ever share with your own Snapchat friends. To hide, open the Map, tap the gear icon and turn on Ghost Mode.

We read Snapchat's support pages and Snap's own posts on Snap Map on October 24, 2026.

About 14,800 people search "snapchat map" each month, and 6,600 search "snapchat location," up 21% in recent months.

How do you share your location on Snap Map?

Open the Map, tap the gear icon at the top of the screen, and choose who can see you. Snapchat gives you three choices beyond Ghost Mode:

SettingWho sees your location
My FriendsAll your Snapchat friends
My Friends, Except…All your friends minus the ones you pick
Only These Friends…Just the friends you pick
Ghost ModeNobody on the Map

Snapchat Support, "How do I share my location with only select friends on Snapchat?" and "How do I turn on Ghost Mode?," read October 24, 2026.

Friends you pick "aren't notified when you choose them," Snapchat says. You can also reach the same choices through Settings: under My Privacy & Data, find Who Can See and tap See My Location.

Sharing goes both ways. You can share only with people you've both added as friends.

How long does your location stay on the Map?

That depends on your phone's location permission:

  • Only while using. The Map updates only while Snapchat is open, then shows your last spot. "If your permissions are set to 'Only while using,' your location on the map will expire after 24 hours," Snapchat says.
  • Always. Your chosen friends see your real-time location even after you close the app. Snapchat recommends this only with trusted friends, and only "for as long as you need."

Snap added the always-on option on February 18, 2022, as a way to share your live location with close friends while you're out. Before that, the app had to be open for your location to update.

How do you turn on Ghost Mode?

  1. Open the Map.
  2. Tap the gear icon to open Map Settings.
  3. Turn on Ghost Mode.
  4. Pick how long: 3 hours, 24 hours or Until Turned Off.

While you're in Ghost Mode, your Bitmoji holds a blue sign with a ghost on it. Two things to know. Your location "will still be shared with Snap, but it won't be visible to anyone else on the Map." And Snaps you submit to the Map "can still show up on the Map, no matter what location setting you choose."

Can you turn off Snap Map completely?

No. "Once you've set up Snap Map for the first time, you can't disable it altogether," Snapchat says. Ghost Mode is how you hide. To stop background sharing at the source, set Snapchat's location permission to "Only while using" in your phone's settings.

When did Snap Map start?

Snap launched it on June 21, 2017, as "a whole new way to explore the world." Ghost Mode was there from day one. The always-on live sharing for close friends came in February 2022.
