How Snapchat picks your up to eight Best Friends, who can see the list, and what every friend emoji means, from the yellow heart to Super BFF.
Your Snapchat Best Friends are "the friends you Snap and Chat with the most," Snapchat says. You can have up to eight, the list updates regularly, and only you can see it. Best Friends sit at the front of the Send To screen and in the Chat section of your profile, and they get Friend Emojis next to their names. A yellow heart, for example, means you're each other's #1.

How does Snapchat choose your Best Friends?
By who you talk to most. Snap's newsroom calls Best Friends "a private feature that shows people who they talk to most frequently over a rolling time period." Snapchat's help page puts it simply: the friends you Snap and Chat with the most.
- Up to eight. "You can have up to eight Best Friends, and they're updated regularly."
- It moves. Because it follows a rolling period, a friend you stop talking to will drop off.

Who can see your Best Friends list?
Only you. "People may see if they're among your Best Friends, but no one else can see your Best Friends list," Snapchat says. A friend can tell they're on your list from the emoji next to your name. Who else is on it stays hidden.

For the yellow heart, it has to go both ways. "You sent the most Snaps to this Snapchatter, and they sent the most Snaps to you, too," Snapchat says.
Snapchat+ subscribers can also pin one friend as their #1 Best Friend, and Snapchat says "only you can see who you pinned." If you're both subscribers and pin each other, you'll both see a new Best Friend emoji.
Why did your Snapchat emoji change?
Because the way you both use Snapchat changed. Friend Emojis "are based on the way you and your friends use Snapchat, and can change regularly." If either of you starts Snapping someone else more, the #1 spot can move, and the hearts move with it.
Don't expect support to bring one back. "We can't add, restore, or replace Best Friend Emojis," Snapchat says, and that includes a lost BFF or Super BFF.
How are Best Friends different from planets and Streaks?
