In the US, Spotify Premium Individual costs $12.99 a month, Spotify's Premium page says. Premium Student is $6.99, Duo is $18.99 for two people, and Family is $21.99 for up to six. Spotify raised all four prices in early 2026, after announcing the change on January 15.

About 90,500 people search "spotify family plan" each month, and 74,000 each search "spotify duo" and "spotify student."

Shared plans get cheap per person. A Duo works out to $9.50 each, and a full Family plan with six people to about $3.67 each.

What's the difference between the plans?

Individual is one account. It includes "15 hours/month of listening time from our audiobooks subscriber catalog," Spotify's page says.

Duo is "For couples who reside at the same address." Each of the two gets their own Premium account.

Family covers "up to 6 family members who live together, including the plan manager," Spotify's support page says. The manager pays and controls the plan, with "Parental controls over all plan members," and can set up managed accounts for young listeners. Spotify notes that "Plan members under 13 get Premium benefits."

On both shared plans, there's a catch with audiobooks. "Only the plan manager has access to audiobook listening time included in the Premium Family/Duo plans," Spotify says.

Student is the discount plan. It "Comes with access to Hulu's (With Ads) plan at no extra cost," and you pay "one bill of $6.99/month + tax to Spotify for both services," Spotify's student page says.

Who can get Spotify Student?

Students at an eligible college or university. Spotify says they get the discount "for up to 4 years (you need to renew and reverify every 12 months)." You'll verify through a SheerID form, and "If your school's not listed in this form, you're not eligible at this time."

Two more rules: you can't pay for Student "by mobile billing or another company," like a phone provider, and studying abroad is fine if your account's country matches where you study.

Do Duo and Family really need the same address?

Yes, by Spotify's terms. Duo is for couples "who reside at the same address," and Family is for members "residing at the same address." Spotify's support page also says members "need to be living with the plan manager." Plan members can only switch plans "once every 12 months."

Is there a free trial?

On October 24, 2026, Spotify offered Individual "Free for 2 months, then $12.99 per month after," for people who haven't "tried Premium before." That offer "ends November 1, 2026." Student came with one month for $0.

Canceling a free trial ends it at once, and Spotify says those trials "can't be reactivated." Our guide on how to cancel Spotify Premium covers the timing.

What is Spotify Basic?

A plan most price guides skip. "Basic is available for previously existing Premium subscribers," Spotify says, and you'll see it on your account page if you qualify. It keeps ad-free music, downloads and high audio quality, but "Basic plans won't include monthly audiobook listening time."

Think before switching to it. "If you cancel your Basic plan, it's not possible to resubscribe to it." Basic isn't offered on Student, or to Duo and Family members.

What's the cheapest way to get Spotify Premium?

  • Share a Family plan at home. Six people pay about $3.67 each.
  • Use Student if you're eligible. It's $6.99 and includes Hulu.
  • Take the free trial if you've never had Premium.
  • Stay on the free plan if ads don't bother you. Spotify's free tier still plays music, with ads.
