Telegram Secret Chat: How It Works and How to Start

A Telegram secret chat is a private one-on-one chat with end-to-end encryption. Telegram says "only you and the recipient can read those messages," and nobody else can decipher them, Telegram included. Secret chats stay on the device where you started them, can't be forwarded, and can delete themselves on a timer.

How do you start a secret chat on Telegram?

Telegram's FAQ gives the steps:

1. Open the profile of the person you want to message.
2. Tap the … menu.
3. Tap Start Secret Chat.

That chat then exists only on the device you've used. "If you start a secret chat with a friend on one of your devices, this chat will only be available on that device," Telegram says. You're free to start as many separate secret chats with the same person as you like.

Deleting works both ways, too. When you delete a message in a secret chat, "the app on the other side of the secret chat will be ordered to delete them as well."

How do self-destructing messages work?

You set a timer, and the message disappears from both phones once it's run out. Telegram's FAQ walks through it. Tap the clock icon, in the input field on iPhone or the top bar on Android, then choose a time.

The countdown starts when the message shows up on the other person's screen. Telegram calls that the moment it "gets two check marks." The timer only covers messages sent after you set it.

Telegram's had these timers in secret chats since 2013. In February 2021 it added auto-delete to every chat, with a choice of 24 hours or 7 days at launch. Auto-delete counts from when a message is sent. Secret chat timers count from when it's read.

Does Telegram tell you about screenshots?

It tries. "We will try to send a notification if a screenshot is taken," Telegram's FAQ says. It also admits "there is no bulletproof way of detecting screenshots on certain systems," including some Android phones.

Nothing stops someone from photographing their screen with another phone, Telegram adds. Share sensitive things only with people you trust.

How do you check a secret chat is really secure?

Compare the encryption key. When a secret chat starts, the two devices swap keys using what's called a Diffie-Hellman key exchange. Telegram then shows a picture of the key in the chat's settings.

"If the two images are the same, you can be sure that the secret chat is secure," Telegram says. Newer apps also show the key as text. It suggests comparing them in person if you can.

Can you use secret chats on desktop?

Only on some apps. Telegram's FAQ says its macOS app "has every feature from the iOS version of the app including Secret Chats." A secret chat started on your phone still won't appear on your computer, since each one lives on its own device.

Logging out wipes your secret chats. "If you log out, you will lose all your secret chats," the FAQ warns.

Is Telegram end-to-end encrypted?

Secret chats are. Normal chats are encrypted too, in a different way. "Server-client encryption is used in Cloud Chats (private and group chats), Secret Chats use an additional layer of client-client encryption," Telegram's FAQ says. It's built on 256-bit AES and 2048-bit RSA encryption with a Diffie-Hellman key exchange, the FAQ adds.

Cloud chats live encrypted in Telegram's cloud, which is why they're on every device you log in to. Telegram says that's on purpose: it lets you get your messages back "even if you lose your device altogether."

Calls are end-to-end encrypted as well. Telegram's technical FAQ says people on a call can compare key pictures to check no one's listening in.
