TikTok Effects and Filters: Find, Use and Make One

Where TikTok effects and filters are in the app, the most-used effects today, how to make one in Effect House, what TikTok rejects, and how creators get paid.

TikTok effects add things to your video or change it: bunny ears, makeup, a game or a floating castle. Filters change the colors. Anyone can build an effect in TikTok's desktop app, Effect House, and the biggest ones end up in millions of videos. On October 24, 2026, one effect called TapTapABC had been used in 88.3 million posts.

We read eight Effect House help pages, its Top Creators page and TikTok's newsroom on October 24, 2026.

About 14,800 people search "tiktok effects" each month, and 12,100 search "tiktok filters."

How do you use effects on TikTok?

You'll find them in the camera:

  1. Tap the + to open the camera.
  2. Tap Effects, to the left of the record button, as creator guides describe it.
  3. Pick an effect from the tray, then record.

The tray has a Trending tab, and effects also appear in category tabs, Effect House says. Some don't show until you start recording, as creator guides note. Interactive ones show a hint, like "Open mouth."

How do you find a specific effect?

Every effect has its own detail page. Effect House lists four ways to reach it:

  • Tap the effect's name on a video that uses it
  • Search for the effect by name
  • Scan its QR code or open its link
  • Open the effects tab on its creator's profile

From that page, you can make a video with the effect right away. That's the same page an effect's QR code and link open.

What's the difference between effects and filters?

Filters change the look of the whole picture. Creator guides place them on the right side of the camera, grouped into sets like Portrait, Landscape, Food and Vibe. There's a slider to set how strong a filter is, and you can add one after recording, too.

Effects do more. Effect House's own examples run "from bunny ears and makeup to floating castles and interactive games."

People call both "filters," and so do effect makers. One of Effect House's top creators goes by "Unique Filter."

Which TikTok effects are used most?

Effect House's Top Creators page shows each creator's biggest effects with their post counts:

EffectCreatorVideos made with it

TapTap Numbers1000 by JanJan Trejo30.2 million

Tom Cat FriendsLeeLoong5.1 million

Effect House, "Top Creators" page, read October 24, 2026. TikTok ranks the creators weekly "based on their effects' quality, usage, and performance in key categories" and shows three effects for each, so this table covers the effects on that page.

Jan Trejo's three TapTap effects lead the page, and his effects had 524.9 million uses in total.

How do you make your own TikTok effect?

You build it on a computer in Effect House. Its guides describe these steps:

  1. Download Effect House and log in. You scan a QR code with the TikTok app: Profile, then Add friends, then the scanner icon.
  2. Start from a template or bring your own assets.
  3. Test it in TikTok. "Preview in TikTok" shows a QR code you scan with your phone.
  4. Submit it. You'll add an icon, a name of up to 25 characters and an optional hint, such as "Tap screen."
  5. Wait for review. It "typically takes 1-3 business days," Effect House says.

Once it's live, your profile gets an effects tab. Effect House's Analytics shows views, posts, opens, likes and shares, and it updates every 24 hours. You can update a live effect up to 5 times within 6 months.

Make a video with your effect first. Effect House says the first video you post with it shows on your profile's effects tab, where visitors can play it.

What will TikTok reject?

Effect House's guidelines set hard technical limits:

LimitiOS and Android
Loading time4 seconds at most
Package size8 MB at most
Image size1024 KB at most
Image dimensions1024 x 1024 px at most

Effect House, "Effect Guidelines," read October 24, 2026.

The content rules come on top of TikTok's Community Guidelines:

  • No brand logos without the brand's permission, and no call-to-action links in Community Effects
  • No cosmetic surgery, such as facelifts, rhinoplasty or lip fillers
  • No colorism or stereotypes about groups of people
  • No drugs, real weapons or crime

If TikTok sends an effect back, you can fix it and resubmit it up to 10 times. Some effects won't run on older phones either. The guidelines name models such as the Samsung Galaxy J3.

Why can't you use some beauty filters?

Your age may be the reason. In late 2024, TikTok said it would restrict some effects that change facial features for users under 18, as PetaPixel reported on December 2, 2024. Effects "designed to be obvious and funny," like bunny ears, weren't affected. TikTok also said it'd expand effect descriptions to say what they change.

The change followed a report TikTok made with Internet Matters, a nonprofit for children's online safety. It found beautifying filters "contributed to a distorted worldview in which perfected images are normalized."

Can you make money from TikTok effects?

Yes, through Effect Creator Rewards. Effect House's current terms:

  • You need the Gold Badge, which "can be unlocked with just a handful of published effects"
  • Rewards start at 100,000 qualified public videos made with your effect within its first 90 days
  • The amount varies, including by the region where the videos were posted
  • It's open in 53 regions

TikTok launched the program on May 16, 2023 with a $6 million fund. It paid $700 when an effect reached 500,000 videos within 90 days, plus $140 for every 100,000 more.

Effect House also runs challenges with prizes. Brands can hire effect creators to build Branded Effects, which advertisers buy from TikTok for Business. Our TikTok Ads Manager guide covers TikTok's ad side. The TikTok Creator Rewards Program is the separate one that pays for videos.
