TikTok Promote: How It Works, Cost and Rules

TikTok Promote turns a public video into an ad you pay for in the app. The steps, the goals, how the cost works, why a video can't be promoted, and refunds.

TikTok Promote is TikTok's own ad tool inside the app. You pick a public video, carousel post or LIVE, choose a goal like more views or followers, set a budget and a number of days, and pay. TikTok then shows your post to more people as a promoted post with an ad label. You have to be an adult where you live to use it.

We read TikTok's Promote terms (last updated June 2026), its ad policies for Promote, its payment help and its business blog on October 24, 2026.

About 22,200 people search "tiktok promote" each month, up 41% in recent months, and another 1,900 ask whether it's worth it.

How do you use TikTok Promote?

  1. Open Promote. On a video, tap "..." and choose Promote, the fire icon. You can also go to your Profile, tap the three lines and open Business suite or Creator tools.
  2. Pick what to boost: a video, a carousel post or a LIVE.
  3. Choose a goal, such as more views, followers or website visits.
  4. Choose your audience. Take TikTok's default, or build your own by location, interests, age and gender.
  5. Set a budget and the number of days, or pick one of TikTok's promotion packs.
  6. Pay. TikTok reviews the promotion and tells you once it's approved.

TikTok's own tip is to start with "one of your best-performing organic videos." After the run, Promote shows who your video reached and how it did against your goal.

Businesses can also boost a creator's post. With "Promote for Others," added in February 2023, you send the creator a permission request first. Once they approve it, you can promote their video like your own.

How much does TikTok Promote cost?

You set the price. "TikTok Promote operates through a bidding system," its terms say. Your bid is "the amount that you want to spend and the number of days" the promotion runs. Bids are counted in US dollars, and a bid in TikTok Coins gets converted. Payment is due as soon as you submit it.

TikTok doesn't publish a fixed price per view or per follower on the pages we read. Its support page says the total depends on your budget and duration and can change with "market demand," as a web search showed it.

You can pay in several ways:

  • TikTok Coins, bought with real money
  • Cards, bank accounts, gift cards and e-wallets, which vary by country
  • TikTok Shop earnings, through GMV Pay
  • Your TikTok Ads Manager balance, once the two are connected

Paying inside the app can cost more. "Additional mobile fees may apply for payment methods used in the TikTok app for Promote orders," TikTok says. If you prepay a Promote balance, it can't go above US$2,000.

Why can't I promote my TikTok video?

These are TikTok's own reasons:

  • It's private. "Promote is only available for public videos."
  • The sound. "You can only promote videos that use original sound or sounds that can be used for commercial purposes." TikTok's Commercial Music Library holds "more than 1,000,000 commercial sounds" you can use.
  • The account. Government, politician and political party accounts aren't eligible.
  • Your age. You must have reached adulthood where you live.
  • The review. A promotion can fail TikTok's ad review, even after you've paid.

If your video uses a popular song, that's usually the snag. Swap in an original sound or a track from the Commercial Music Library and try again.

Can you cancel TikTok Promote and get a refund?

You can pause it. "You may not cancel your order for Promoted Content ... once you have confirmed the Order. However, you may ask to pause your campaign," TikTok's terms say.

Unused money comes back in some cases. If a promotion is "closed early or fails the review, the unused balance of the orders will be refunded to your Promote Balance," TikTok says. You'll see that amount under the Mine tab in Promote.

Getting it out of Promote is a separate step:

  • Withdrawals go back to your bank account, and processing time varies.
  • Apple Pay payments can't be withdrawn from the Promote balance. Apple's rules apply.
  • Ads Manager users can't withdraw the balance. They can spend it on a later campaign or close the Promote account.
  • Prepaid balances can't be refunded "unless you cease using Promote."

Is TikTok Promote worth it?

It depends on what you need. Promote buys reach from TikTok itself, shown to the audience you choose, so the views and followers come from people who saw your post as an ad. TikTok makes no promise about results. Its business blog warns, "Past performance does not guarantee or predict future performance."

It's most useful for a video that already does well on its own, and for clear goals like messages or website visits that you can count. Watch the results after each run before you spend more.

Frequently asked questions

You choose the budget and the number of days. TikTok counts bids in US dollars and charges when you submit.

Can I pay for Promote with TikTok Coins?

Yes. Coins are one of the payment options, along with cards and e-wallets.
