Twitch VODs: How Long They Last and How to Keep Them

A Twitch VOD is a saved copy of a past broadcast. How long it's kept depends on who streamed it. "Partners have VODs stored for 60 days, vs only 14 days for Affiliates," Twitch's Partner page says, and Twitch's help center gives everyone else 7 days. Turbo and Prime users get 60 days too. If you'd like to keep one longer, turn it into a Highlight or download it before it expires.

We read Twitch's Partner page directly and its help center through a web search on October 24, 2026. Twitch's help pages load by script, so their wording comes from that search.

About 33,100 people search "twitch vod" each month, and 1,900 search how to download them.

The 7-day rule is newer. Twitch's help says it took effect on September 1, 2022, for channels that aren't a Partner, Affiliate, Prime or Turbo user. Before that, those channels got 14 days.

So a small streamer can double their VOD time by reaching Affiliate. Our guide to the Twitch Affiliate requirements covers that bar. Prime is the other shortcut, and our Twitch Prime guide covers what else it gives on Twitch.

How do you turn on VODs?

First, check that past broadcast storage is on in your stream settings. It's easy to miss. Twitch's help says to confirm this setting "to make sure your broadcasts are saved." If it's off, your streams vanish when they end.

How do you keep a Twitch VOD longer?

You've got two ways, and both work before the deadline:

1. Make a Highlight. Highlights stay on your channel after the past broadcast's gone. They count toward a storage limit, since Twitch says "Only content classified as Highlights or Uploads count towards your storage limit."
2. Download it. Export or download the VOD before the 7, 14 or 60 days run out, and keep your own copy.

Streaming in dual format or 2K? The vertical or 2K version "expires after 7 days," while the horizontal or 1080p version keeps the normal retention period.

How do you watch someone's past broadcasts?

Open the streamer's channel and go to the Videos section, where past broadcasts, Highlights and clips sit. If nothing shows, the VODs may have expired, or the streamer may have turned storage off or deleted them.
