How to Stream on Twitch From a PC, a Console or a Phone
Go live on Twitch from a PC with OBS, a PS5, an Xbox or the Twitch app. Twitch's own steps, its bitrate table, your stream key and what replaced Twitch Studio.
To stream on Twitch from a PC, you log in, set up broadcasting software like OBS, add a title, category and tags in your Creator Dashboard, and go live. Those are Twitch's own four steps from its Creator Camp. Consoles and phones work too. A PS5 streams from Broadcast, an Xbox from Capture & Share, and a phone from the Twitch app.
We read Twitch's Creator Camp and two Twitch blog posts on October 23, 2026, and OBS's quick start through our server. Twitch's help center loads by script, so its broadcasting guidelines come from Google's view of them.
About 18,100 people search "how to stream on twitch" each month, and another 12,100 search "how to go live on twitch."
What do you need to stream on Twitch?
Less than you'd think. You'll need a Twitch account, something to stream from and a steady connection. Twitch's help center says "a good or stable network connection is required to stream on Twitch."
Creator Camp's advice for gear is short: "Don't overcomplicate your tech until you are ready." If you upgrade one thing, make it sound. "The quality of your audio is critical in helping you connect with viewers," Twitch says. You'll only need a camera if you want viewers to see your reactions.
Turn on two-factor authentication while you're setting up. Twitch requires it before Affiliate onboarding, and it protects the account your stream runs on.
How do you stream on Twitch from a PC?
Twitch's PC chapter lists four steps: "Log in or Create a Twitch account," "Set up your broadcasting software & capture card," "Add a title, category, and tags in your Creator Dashboard," and "Go Live." In practice, with OBS Studio, it looks like this.
- Install OBS and run its wizard. OBS's quick start begins with the Auto-Configuration Wizard, which "takes into account what you want to do in OBS Studio, your computer's hardware resources, and your network conditions." It opens on first launch. Later, it's under Tools.
- Connect your channel. OBS needs your stream key. Twitch calls it an "authorization key" that "uniquely identifies your stream as it enters the Twitch ingesting subsystem." Guides from 2026 place it in the Creator Dashboard under Settings, then Stream. Don't share it. Treat it like a password.
- Add your sources. Add a game or window capture, your microphone and a camera if you have one. If the audio meters don't move, OBS says to open "Settings → Audio and select the devices manually."
- Fill in your stream details. Set the title, category and tags in your Creator Dashboard, so the directory knows where to list you.
- Run a test. OBS writes, "We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues." Twitch points streamers to its Twitch Inspector tool to check "the health of your stream."
- Go live. Click Start Streaming in OBS.
Twitch's own app, Twitch Studio, used to do this in one place. It's gone now (more below).
What settings should you use?
Twitch's broadcasting guidelines give a bitrate for each quality level.
| Quality | Resolution | Video bitrate | Frame rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p 60fps | 1920x1080 | 6,000 kbps | 60 or 50 |
| 1080p 30fps | 1920x1080 | 4,500 kbps | 30 or 25 |
| 720p 60fps | 1280x720 | 4,500 kbps | 60 |
| 720p 30fps | 1280x720 | 3,000 kbps | 30 |
Twitch Help, "Broadcasting Guidelines," as Google showed it on October 23, 2026. Rate control CBR, keyframe interval 2 seconds.
For audio, Twitch lists "Codec: AAC-LC," a "Recommended Bitrate (for maximum compatibility) 96kbps" and a "Maximum audio bit rate: 160 kbps." If your upload speed is tight, pick the 720p row. A clean 720p stream looks better than a 1080p one that's dropping frames.
Should you turn on Enhanced Broadcasting?
If your graphics card supports it, it's worth a try. Viewers on slow connections need lower-quality copies of your stream, called transcodes. "Twitch offers transcodes to all streamers, but historically we've only been able to guarantee them to Partners," Twitch wrote in January 2024.
Enhanced Broadcasting makes those copies on your own PC. It will "create multiple encodings of your stream using dedicated encoder resources in your GPU," Twitch says. In OBS, "In the Multitrack Video section, check the Enable Enhanced Broadcasting checkbox," per Twitch's help center. Twitch's 2K streams use it too.
How do you stream on Twitch from a PS5 or Xbox?
Both consoles can stream to Twitch, so you don't need a PC. You link your Twitch account once, and Twitch says you can do that "from a mobile device or computer."
On PlayStation, Creator Camp's steps are "Select a Game," "Navigate to Broadcast," log in, "Update stream information" and "Go Live."
On Xbox, they're "Navigate to Capture & Share," log in, "Select a game," "Update stream information" and "Go Live."
To show your face, a PS5 needs a PlayStation Camera, Twitch says. For more engaging elements, Twitch points to "a streaming PC or capture card."
How do you stream on Twitch from your phone?
You'll use the Twitch app. Creator Camp's mobile steps are: download the app and log in, "Tap the + button," "Permit audio and camera," update your stream information, and "Tap the Stream button."
Phone streams suit IRL content, like walks, events or travel. For mobile games, Creator Camp has a separate chapter.
What happened to Twitch Studio?
Twitch shut it down. "We will be discontinuing support of Twitch Studio after May 30, 2024," Twitch's blog says. Tubefilter reported it had launched for public use in 2019.
About 22,200 people still search "twitch studio" each month. If you used it, you'll need new software. OBS's wizard picks starting settings for your PC and connection.
What comes after your first stream?
A schedule, and then Affiliate. The bar is 25 followers, 4 hours, 4 different days and an average of 3 viewers on 4 of those days. Our Twitch Affiliate requirements guide explains how Twitch counts each one. For the viewer side, see how to get more Twitch viewers.
If you're also weighing Kick, our guide to streaming on Kick covers its setup, and Kick vs Twitch compares the pay.
Hclout sells Twitch followers and Twitch live views, so weigh our advice the way you'd weigh any seller's. Twitch says "fake engagement and artificial inflation of channel statistics are violations of our policies," and the people who stay come from the stream itself.
