What Does FYP Mean? TikTok's For You Page Explained
FYP means For You Page, TikTok's personal feed. What #fyp does, how TikTok picks videos for it, why followers aren't a direct factor, and how to reset it.
FYP stands for For You Page. It's the feed TikTok opens on, filled with videos picked for you, and Buffer's glossary calls it "the first page a user lands on" in the app. Merriam-Webster defines it as "a social media feed that contains personalized content based on the user's interests." TikTok says its For You feed "reflects preferences unique to each user." When people put #fyp in a caption, they're hoping the video lands on other people's For You pages.

What does #fyp mean on TikTok?
It's a hashtag people add hoping TikTok will push the video to more people's For You pages. TikTok hasn't said #fyp does that. It counts hashtags as one kind of "video information," next to captions and sounds. Foundation's October 2026 guide puts it bluntly: "The mistake is treating hashtags like a shortcut." "Fyp" alone gets about 301,000 searches a month, and "fyp meaning" another 201,000.

TikTok says settings get "lower weight in the recommendation system relative to other data points" because users "don't actively express these as preferences." Watching matters most. In TikTok's words, "A strong indicator of interest, such as whether a user finishes watching a longer video from beginning to end, would receive greater weight than a weak indicator." The example it gives of a weak one is "whether the video's viewer and creator are both in the same country."
Do you need followers to get on the FYP?
No. TikTok says "neither follower count nor whether the account has had previous high-performing videos are direct factors in the recommendation system." It adds that a big account is still "likely to receive more views" because more people follow it. So a new account can land on the For You page, and the videos people watch to the end are the ones TikTok's system weighs most.
How do you reset your FYP?
TikTok has a built-in reset. TikTok Support lists these steps:
- In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
- Tap the menu button at the top.
- Tap Settings and privacy, then Content Preferences.
- Tap Refresh your For You feed, then follow the prompts.
When TikTok launched it on March 16, 2023, it said the feature lets you "view content on their For You feed as if they just signed up for TikTok." For a lighter fix, TikTok says you can "long-press on a video and tap 'Not Interested'." "How to reset tiktok fyp" gets about 2,400 searches a month, up 41%.
How do you get on the For You page?
TikTok doesn't promise a way in, but its own list points to a few habits:
- Make videos people finish. Completion is the strong signal TikTok names.
- Describe the video. Captions, sounds and hashtags are the "video information" TikTok reads.
- Get people to interact. Likes, shares and comments are part of what TikTok ranks.
- Skip the tag tricks. A #fyp tag is just one more hashtag.
Searches for "how to get on the for you page" are up 75% in recent months, though from a small base of about 210 a month.
