Why Can't I Comment on Instagram? 7 Reasons and Fixes
Instagram blocks comments with more than 5 mentions or 30 hashtags, repeats, fast activity, and the poster's own settings. How to tell which one it is.
If you can't comment on Instagram, check three things first. Your comment may break one of Instagram's hard limits. The poster may have limited who can comment. Or Instagram may be slowing your account down. The Help Center's limits are short: "You can't include more than 5 @ mentions in a single comment," "more than 30 hashtags in a single comment," or "the same comment" over and over. If you see "We restrict certain activity to protect our community," Instagram has flagged your activity as possibly automated.
We read Instagram's Help Center and the guides as Google shows them on October 23, 2026. We didn't test this on a live account.
Why can't I comment on Instagram?
| Reason | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Over 5 mentions | Error on that comment | Tag fewer people |
| Over 30 hashtags | Error on that comment | Cut the tags |
| Same comment again | Repeats fail | Change the words |
| Poster limits comments | Box missing on their posts | Nothing you can do |
| You're restricted | Your comments hide | Ask the poster |
| Activity limit | "We restrict certain activity" | Wait it out |
| Old app | Errors on every post | Update Instagram |
Instagram Help Center pages on comment errors and Limits, and Elfsight's October 14, 2026 guide, as Google showed them on October 23, 2026.
The Help Center's own first step is the app. It says "If your Instagram app is up to date, you may be getting an error for another reason," and then lists the limits above.
What does "We restrict certain activity to protect our community" mean?
It's Instagram's activity limit. Elfsight's October 2026 guide says "If you like or comment on multiple posts too quickly, Instagram may perceive this as automated action or spam." A Reddit answer from June 2024 puts it the same way: Instagram "determines a behavioural pattern with your actions." IPRoyal calls it an action block, "an account-level restriction on specific features, such as following, liking, commenting."
The fix is time. Stop commenting for a while, don't use apps that act on your account, and make sure your login is secure. If Instagram removed a comment by mistake, you can ask it to review the decision from the notice it shows you.
Can the poster stop you from commenting?
Yes, in a few ways. A poster can turn comments off on a post, or allow comments only from people they follow or their followers. They can also limit or restrict accounts. The Help Center says accounts in Limits "can still comment on your posts and reels but their comments will be hidden unless you approve them." In that case your comment posts, but nobody else sees it.
If someone blocked you, you can't comment at all. Our page on how to know if someone blocked you on Instagram lists the signs.
Why do my comments disappear after posting?
Usually because of Hidden Words or a limit on the other side. Instagram added Hidden Words in April 2021 as a place to switch on "comment and DM request filters." So a poster's filters can hide comments with certain words. Restricted or limited accounts' comments also stay hidden until they're approved. A Reddit thread from September 2023 adds another cause: a comment that "was sent 6 times in a row" by mistake, which trips the repeat rule.
If you'd like more comments on your own posts, Hclout's free tier gives 12 free Instagram likes and 100 free Instagram views on a public post, with no password, on the free page. A short Cloudflare check runs before each claim. Our guide to free Instagram comments covers that side.

You may have used more than 5 mentions or 30 hashtags, repeated a comment, hit an activity limit, or the poster may limit comments.

Open the post, tap the three dots, and turn off commenting.
