The parent term. Two accounts agree to follow each other so both counts rise. Also written follow4follow or followforfollow; the 4 is texting shorthand for "for", the same way b4 is before.
Followback: Follow back
X mostly, as a culture more than a deal
The soft version: no explicit deal, just an account signalling it returns follows. Teamfollowback hashtags made this a whole identity on early Twitter.
L4L: Like for like
Instagram and TikTok comments
Trading likes on posts instead of follows. Cheaper to give than a follow and worth less back, since a like from somebody who never sees your content again moves nothing.
Sub4Sub: Subscribe for subscribe

The YouTube version, and the one that can cost you the channel: YouTube's fake engagement policy names it outright, and the offer alone counts as the violation.
S4S: Sub for sub, or shoutout for shoutout

Watching each other's videos to push view counts. The watch time is real seconds of somebody's life, which is why these trades stall the moment either side has anything better to do.
R4R: Retweet for retweet

Reposting each other's posts. Careful with this one elsewhere: on Reddit, r4r is a personals tag with nothing to do with growth, and searching it will teach you that quickly.
Add4Add: Add for add
Snapchat
Snapchat's flavour, sometimes written A4A. Unusual because most Snapchat profiles show no public follower number, so the trade inflates a figure almost nobody can see.

One post, and everyone who joins the thread follows everyone else in it. Fast, chaotic, and the unfollow wave a week later is just as coordinated.

Trading upvotes to lift posts or farm karma. Reddit prohibits vote manipulation explicitly and enforces it more consistently than any platform on this page.
