Against the rules
Reddit's content policy prohibits vote manipulation explicitly, including asking for votes and organising vote exchanges. It's one of the site's most consistently enforced rules.
Karma gates participation in many subreddits, which is what drives the trade. Followers on Reddit do almost nothing, because content is distributed through subreddits rather than a following feed.
Vote manipulation gets accounts suspended and can get entire subreddits actioned. Reddit's detection for this is considerably better than people assume, because vote patterns are easy to analyse.
Discord servers and private groups. Doing it openly on Reddit is a fast way to be banned.

The same arithmetic applies on every platform. Engagement rate is your likes and comments divided by your followers, and traded followers add to the bottom of that fraction without touching the top. An account sitting at 10% can fall to 1% without a single real follower leaving.

Go slowly
Ten to twenty follows an hour looks like a person. Two hundred looks like software.
