What is the follow/unfollow method?

Follow/unfollow is the oldest trick in growth: follow strangers in bulk so some follow back, then unfollow them to keep your ratio pretty. It worked for years at tool-driven scale, platforms built rate limits specifically to kill it, and today it survives mostly as a warning.

Why it worked

The mechanic exploits politeness: a follow is attention, and a slice of people return it. At hundreds of follows a day, run by automation, that slice compounded into real audiences.

A whole tool industry industrialised it. Those tools' obituaries now fill our graveyard: the platforms killed them with action blocks, follow caps and device fingerprinting.

What it costs today

  • Safety: automation on your logged-in account is the highest-risk category there is, up to suspension.
  • Quality: audiences recruited by notification engage like ghosts; they followed a ping, not your content.
  • Reputation: the churn is public. Follower charts and following-count history show the sawtooth to anyone who looks.

The honest comparison

Manual follow/unfollow inside the limits still technically works, slowly, and costs hours daily for an audience of strangers who half-remember following you.

Every alternative wins on some axis: content wins on quality, exchanges win on price, delivered followers win on speed and safety (nothing runs on your login). The method's one modern use is understanding why your competitor's following count reads 7,500.

Common questions

Does follow/unfollow still work in 2026?

Weakly, manually, within caps. The tool-scale version is dead: automation on user accounts is what platforms detect best and punish hardest.

How many accounts can I follow per day?

Platforms don't publish caps and they vary by account age and standing. Hitting them triggers action blocks; repeat hits escalate. Whatever number a guide quotes is a guess.

Why do accounts that did this have bad engagement?

Because the audience never chose the content. Follow-back audiences are the textbook source of ghost followers, and the engagement rate reports it forever.
