Edits App: Instagram's Free Video Editor Explained

Edits is Instagram's video editing app for your phone. Meta calls it "Instagram's standalone video creation app," and its store listing says it's "a free video editor." It exports in 4K with no watermark, records clips up to 10 minutes and adds AI tools, captions and Reels insights. Meta launched it on April 22, 2025.

We read three of Meta's newsroom posts on Edits, its Google Play listing and two dated reports on its launch on October 24, 2026. Instagram's own blog doesn't open for our reader, so Meta's newsroom is our main source.

"Edits app" gets about 201,000 searches a month, and "edits video editor" is up 49%.

What can the Edits app do?

The teleprompter came from creators' feedback. "Creators told us it was hard to read scripts from their notes while filming, so we built an in-app teleprompter," wrote Brett Westervelt, Meta's head of Edits. You can change the text size and speed as you go.

Is the Edits app free?

Yes. It's "a free video editor," the listing says, and TechRadar's launch review said it was "out now as a free download." Exports carry no watermark, so you can post the same video on Instagram or anywhere else.

How does AI editing in Edits work?

Meta added generative AI video editing to Edits on June 11, 2025. It gave "more than 50 editing prompts" that change your outfit, location, lighting or style. At launch, you could "transform 10 seconds of your video for free for a limited time," in the US and "more than a dozen countries."

You'll pick a preset, and Meta AI reworks the clip to match, turning it into a comic-book look or a video game scene. From Edits, you can share the result straight to Instagram or Facebook.

What are the Ideas tab and insights?

There's more to Edits than editing. "In the Ideas tab, your saved reels and audio from Instagram live alongside sticky notes for your next big idea," Meta says. The app also builds an inspiration feed from what you post, writes "insights that summarize your comments," and suggests weekly ideas.

Templates are open, too. Tap one and "you can open the project file to see how it was made, including whether it uses trending audio," then make it your own.

Mosseri's pitch was simple: "Today we're announcing a new app called 'Edits,' for those of you who are passionate about making videos on your phone." The timing drew notice. PetaPixel reported that CapCut, TikTok owner ByteDance's editor, had gone offline in the US that same weekend.

Meta says there's more coming: "bilingual captions, advanced color adjustments, speed curves," and tools you can customize. Those are plans, so check the app for what's live.

How popular is Edits?

On October 24, 2026, its Google Play listing in the UK store showed 100M+ downloads and a 4.68-star rating from about 1.89 million ratings.
