Can You Change Your Reddit Username?

Reddit won't let you change a username once it's final, capitals included. What you can change, why old guides say 30 days, and how to start over.

No. Reddit's help center says "once a username is finalized, it can't be changed in any way, including its capitalization." What you can change is your display name, the name on your profile. On reddit.com it's in the Profile section of your Settings, and in the app it's under Edit on your profile page. If you want a different u/ name, Reddit's answer is a new account, and you're allowed to keep both.

We read Reddit's help center through its public API on October 24, 2026. Older versions came from the Internet Archive.

About 22,200 people search "how to change reddit username" each month, and 12,100 more search "change reddit username." Reddit's help page shows that 11,365 of 27,323 readers found its answer helpful.

Why do some guides say you have 30 days?

Because some people once could. Reddit used to give Google and Apple sign-ups an assigned username they could swap. Its help pages show each change:

Page dateWhat Reddit's help said
April 5, 2023A finalized username can't change, with "one exception" for Google or Apple sign-ups that hadn't finalized an assigned name
November 20, 2023Google or Apple sign-ups got an assigned name and "30 days to change it," lost if they posted or commented first
August 7, 2024The exception covered only the iOS app and reddit.com. Android sign-ups were final at creation
January 9, 2025The exception is gone: "it can't be changed in any way"
July 31, 2026Every sign-up method: "This username cannot be changed"

Reddit Help, "Can I change my username?", "How do I change my username if I created an account with my Google account or Apple ID?" and "How do I sign up for a Reddit account?", from Internet Archive copies (November 2023 to October 2024) and the live help center, read October 24, 2026.

That's why 2024 tutorials walk you through a change. A February 2025 Reddit reply still says "You have 30 days." Reddit has since taken down its Google and Apple username article.

How do you change your Reddit display name?

On reddit.com, open Settings, go to the Profile section and edit your display name. In the Reddit app, go to your profile page, tap Edit and change it there.

Reddit lists the display name with your bio, banner, avatar and social links as profile settings you can edit. Your u/ username stays the same.

How do you get a new Reddit username?

Make a new account. "You're more than welcome to create multiple Reddit accounts and you can even use the same email address to verify both of them," Reddit says. Do it in this order:

  1. Save what you need. You can see the communities you've joined from your account. Reddit's data request form sends a copy of your data, though "It may take up to 30 days to prepare your data."
  2. Free up your Google or Apple login. Each one "can only be linked to a single Reddit account at a time." Disconnect it under Connected Accounts in your Account Settings, or the sign-up will log you back into the old account.
  3. Pick the name carefully. At sign-up you can "choose a username or cycle through the available options," and Reddit notes, "This username cannot be changed."
  4. Don't vote with both. Using two accounts to vote on the same posts or comments "is considered vote manipulation which violates the Reddit Rules."

The new account starts fresh, with its own karma and cake day. Our Reddit karma guide covers how a new account builds it. Done with the old one? See how to delete a Reddit account, and clear out any posts you don't want left first.

Can you take a username from an inactive account?

No. "No, usernames can't be reused," Reddit says, and that holds even after an account is deleted. A deleted account's name "will now be unusable."

Frequently asked questions

Can you change your Reddit username?

No. Once it's finalized, Reddit doesn't allow any change, including capitalization.

Can you change the capitals in your username?

No. Reddit's rule covers "its capitalization" too.

What's the difference between a username and a display name?

Your username is your permanent u/ name. Your display name is the name on your profile, and you can edit it in your profile settings.

Can you have two Reddit accounts?

Yes, even on the same email address. Just don't use them to vote on the same posts or comments.

Will deleting your account free up the name?

No. Reddit says a deleted account's username can't be reused by you or anyone else.

Can you still change a name Reddit gave you at sign-up?

No. The 30-day option for Google and Apple sign-ups was gone by January 2025.

Hclout sells Reddit views, subscribers and shares on its Reddit page, so weigh our advice the way you'd weigh any seller's. None of them add karma, and a new account still has to earn its own.
