How to Download Instagram Reels (and Turn It Off)
Tap Share, then Download. Instagram lets anyone save public reels unless the creator turns it off. Why it fails, how to stop it, and the watermark.
You download an Instagram Reel by tapping the share icon under it, then Download. The reel saves to your phone. It only works on reels from public accounts, and only when the creator hasn't turned downloads off. Instagram's Help Center puts it like this: "For public accounts: Anyone on Instagram can download your reels and share your reels, unless you change your reels download settings."

How do you download someone else's reel?
- Open the reel in the Instagram app.
- Tap the share icon, the paper plane.
- Tap Download. The reel saves to your phone.
Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, announced this on June 21, 2023, first for users in the US. He said "Reels from only public accounts are eligible for download," WeRSM reported that day. On November 22, 2023, TechCrunch reported that anyone could now download public reels.
Why can't you download a reel?
It's usually one of two things:
- The account is private. Downloads only work on reels from public accounts.
- The creator turned downloads off. Instagram says creators can do that "in your account settings or on individual reels."

How do you stop people downloading your reels?
TechCrunch gave the path when downloads went worldwide: open Settings, then Privacy, then Reels and Remix, and turn off "Allow people to download your Reels." Instagram's Help Center says you can also turn downloads off on single reels. A private account stops downloads too, since only public reels can be downloaded.
Do downloaded reels have a watermark?
At launch, Mosseri didn't say. The picture he shared showed an Instagram logo with the account name, WeRSM reported. Today many downloader sites sell "no watermark" as their main feature. One of them, Klipa, says it saves reels "without the watermark Instagram adds to its own downloads." That mark shows whose reel it is. Keep the credit when you share someone's work.
Are reel downloader sites safe?
We read Google's first 16 results for "how to download instagram reels" on November 3, 2026. Ten were downloader websites. The five we read all sold "no watermark," and only one mentioned Instagram's own Download option.
