Spotify Audiobooks: Hours, Plans and How It Works

Spotify Premium comes with audiobooks, in hours. In the US, Premium includes "15 hours of audiobook listening time on Premium, every month," from a catalog of "over 700,000 audiobook titles." When the hours run out, you can buy more, add a monthly add-on, or unlock a single book.

Premium Student doesn't include audiobook time. "The Premium Student plan doesn't include audiobook listening time," Spotify's help says. Our Spotify Premium price guide covers what each plan costs.

How does Spotify count audiobook hours?

At normal speed, whatever speed you choose. Spotify gives an example: "if you listen to a 5-hour audiobook at 2x speed, even if you finish the audiobook in 2.5 hours, your audiobook listening time is reduced by 5 hours."

Three more rules from Spotify's help:

• Relistening counts again. Play the whole book twice and it costs 5 more hours.
• Hours don't roll over. Your "unused audiobook listening time expires on a monthly basis," and Spotify doesn't refund it.
• Unlocked books are free to replay. A book you paid to unlock doesn't use your hours.

If you run out mid-chapter, the app tells you and saves your place. You'll find your remaining time under Settings and privacy, then Account, then your plan, then Audiobook listening time.

Do Spotify Family and Duo members get audiobooks?

Not on their own. "Only the plan manager has access to audiobook listening time," Spotify says, and the manager can't share those hours.

Members have two ways in:

• The manager buys Audiobooks+ for Plan Members, an add-on with its own monthly hours.
• The member gets a top-up through the plan manager.

Audiobooks+ bought for the manager stays with the manager. Spotify says those hours "aren't shared with plan members."

What is Audiobooks+?

A monthly add-on for heavy listeners. It gives "15 extra hours every month, on top of what billing subscribers get with Premium," Spotify's US page says. After a 1-month free trial for new subscribers, it's $11.99 a month on top of your Premium bill.

Your plan's own hours get used first. Audiobooks+ hours kick in after those run out. If you cancel Premium, the add-on goes with it.

What is Spotify Audiobooks Access?

An audiobook-only plan, US only, at $9.99 a month. It gives "15 hours of listening time from our audiobook subscriber catalog every month, with ad-supported access to music and podcasts."

It doesn't include other Premium features, so your music has ads. It also doesn't work on some devices: Spotify names Apple Watch, Garmin, Samsung watches, Tesla and Car Thing. If you're on Premium now, you'll have to cancel Premium and wait for it to end before switching.

Can you buy a single audiobook on Spotify?

Yes. A one-time payment unlocks a book for your account, and you can listen anytime. There's one catch: "Audiobook payments can only be done through the web," Spotify says. After that, you can play it in the app and download the whole book to listen offline.

Spotify notes you're buying access. The book "is not being sold or transferred to you."

Top-ups have their own refund rule. You can ask for a full refund within 7 days of buying, if you haven't used any of the time. Spotify reviews each request case by case.
