Spotify Jam: How to Start and Join One

Start a Spotify Jam and invite friends by link, QR code or Bluetooth. Premium hosts, Free users join in person, and it works in cars and on TVs.

A Spotify Jam is a shared listening session. Everyone in it adds songs to one queue and listens together, in the same room or apart. To start one, tap the speaker icon on what's playing, or the three-dot menu on a playlist or song, then tap Start a Jam and Invite. Share the link or the QR code. You need Premium to start and host a Jam, and Free users can join one in person.

We read Spotify's support page (updated February 17, 2026) and its newsroom posts on Jam on October 24, 2026.

About 18,100 people search "spotify jam" each month, 9,900 search how to start one, and 6,600 search how to join one. Jam keeps growing, too. In January 2026 Spotify reported its "daily active users more than doubling year over year."

"Free users can join and add songs to a Jam hosted by a Premium user, allowing for in-person Jams," Spotify says. Joining from somewhere else takes Premium.

How do you start a Jam on Spotify?

On your phone:

  1. Tap the speaker icon on what's playing, or the three-dot menu on a playlist or song.
  2. Tap Start a Jam.
  3. Tap Invite, then share the QR code or tap Share link.

Friends nearby can also hold their phone next to yours, within about 1 meter, if they're logged in and Bluetooth is on.

On a computer, right-click a track or playlist, choose Start a Jam, then Invite. Jam came to desktop on March 13, 2024.

Spotify can start a Jam by itself. It does that "when you're connecting to a smart speaker or most Bluetooth speakers," and people on the same Wi-Fi get an invite. You can switch that off in the Connect Picker.

How do you join a Jam?

Tap the invite link, scan the QR code, or hold your phone near the host's with Bluetooth on. Choose whether to listen remotely or in person, then tap Join.

Premium users can also start a remote Jam from Spotify's Messages. Tap Jam at the top right of a chat, and if your friend accepts, they become the host. Requests "time out if they aren't accepted within a few minutes," Spotify says, and Messages features are for users 16 and up.

Can you Jam in the car or on a TV?

Yes. Cars are where people Jam most. In August 2025 Spotify said cars were "the top device fans use to Jam, followed by speakers, phones, and TVs."

  • Android Auto: you need Android Auto 14.5 or later and Spotify 9.0.50 or later. Tap Jam in the Now Playing view.
  • CarPlay: tap Queue & Jam in the Now Playing view.
  • TV: tap Queue & Jam and share the QR code.

Friends join by scanning the QR code or with Bluetooth, then add songs from their own phones.

What can the host control?

  • Who's in. Remove one person, or everyone at once.
  • What's playing. Switch off "Let others change what's playing," and guests can only add songs.
  • Volume. Shared volume works on Chromecast and Amazon Cast. It's unavailable on Bluetooth devices and AirPlay.

Stay in the Jam if you're hosting. "If a host leaves, it'll end the Jam for everyone," Spotify warns.

Why isn't Spotify Jam working?

Spotify's own checklist:

  • Can't host? Make sure your Premium subscription is active and you've picked the right speaker.
  • Can't join? Accept the host's invitation first, then pick the right speaker.
  • Can't change the volume? The speaker has to support shared volume, and the host has to turn it on.
