Spotify Playlist Cover: How to Change or Make One
How to change a Spotify playlist cover on your phone or computer, design one with Create cover art, the one-cover rule, image rules and the only size limit.
You can give any playlist you created a cover of your own. Upload a photo, or design one inside Spotify with its Create cover art tool, which works on the free plan too. Each playlist keeps one custom cover at a time. Spotify says listeners have made "more than 8 billion playlists," so a cover's an easy way to make yours stand out.
We read Spotify's two help articles on playlist covers, two of its newsroom posts and its developer docs on October 24, 2026.
About 14,800 people search "spotify playlist cover" each month.

It only works on playlists you made. Spotify's steps say to click "the image on a playlist you created," and the design tool asks for "a playlist that you personally created." The web player uses the same steps as the desktop app.
How does Spotify's Create cover art work?
It's a cover maker built into the mobile app. Spotify launched it on October 22, 2024, in beta, for "both Free and Premium users." You can:
- Add text in styles that use Spotify's own typeface, Spotify Mix
- Pick background colors and gradients
- Add your own photos with "image masking and visual effects"
- Add stickers, including limited packs from artists
When you save, the playlist takes the new cover, and you can share it with friends.
There's one rule to know. "You can only save one custom cover art per playlist at a time, and each new cover you create will override the previous one," Spotify says. Want two looks? Copy the playlist first: open its three-dot menu, tap Add to other playlist, then New playlist.
Where is Create cover art available?
It started in 65 markets, in English only. On June 11, 2025, Spotify added "41 new languages and 63 additional markets." By then it had released four sticker packs: Valentine's Day, a 13-sticker summer set, and limited packs for Tyler, The Creator and COWBOY CARTER.
It's on phones and tablets only. On a computer, you can upload a photo. Designing a cover needs the mobile app.
What size should a Spotify playlist cover be?
Spotify doesn't publish a pixel size for covers you add in the app.
The one official limit is for apps and developers. Spotify's Web API takes covers as "Base64 encoded JPEG image data, maximum payload size is 256 KB." Tools that set covers for you have to stay under that.
Why did my Spotify playlist cover get removed?
It probably broke Spotify's image rules. "Content that violates the Spotify Platform Rules will be removed," Spotify says. You also can't upload images that break "copyright, trademark, or personal image rights."
Spotify sums up the last one plainly: "don't post an image of someone without their consent." Stick to your own photos, your own designs or Spotify's stickers.
Want covers out of your way? The compact library layout hides them. Turn it on under Settings, then Library, then Use compact library layout.
