Spotify Web Player: How to Use It and Fix It

Spotify's web player runs in your browser at open.spotify.com. Supported browsers, sound quality on free and Premium, and fixes when it won't play.

The Spotify web player is Spotify in your browser, at open.spotify.com. You log in with your Spotify account and play music, podcasts and playlists without installing anything. It works on the free plan and on Premium. Spotify's help lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari as supported on computers.

We read seven Spotify Support articles about the web player, sound quality, devices and logging out on October 24, 2026.

"Spotify web player" gets about 823,000 searches a month, and "spotify web" about 2.24 million.

Which browsers work with the Spotify web player?

DeviceSupported browsers
ComputerChrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera and Safari, in versions updated within the last 30 months
Android (6.0 or higher)Chrome 87+, Samsung Internet 17+, Firefox 115+
iPhone and iPadChrome 87+, Safari 15+

Spotify Support, "Spotify web player help," read October 24, 2026.

If your browser's older, update it from its Help menu. That's the first fix Spotify suggests.

How good does the web player sound?

It's a step below the apps. Spotify's numbers:

Where you listenFreePremium
Web playerAAC 128 kbit/sAAC 256 kbit/s
Desktop and mobile appsUp to about 160 kbit/sUp to about 320 kbit/s, plus lossless up to 24-bit/44.1kHz FLAC

Spotify Support, "Audio quality," read October 24, 2026.

"You can't adjust music quality on the web player," Spotify says. Podcasts are the one exception, and they sound a little better there. They play at about 128 kbit/s on the web, against about 96 kbit/s on other devices.

If sound quality matters to you, use the desktop app. Our guide to Spotify Premium prices covers what each plan costs.

Why is the Spotify web player not working?

Spotify's help suggests these fixes, in this order:

  1. Update your browser. On computers, Spotify supports browser versions updated within the last 30 months.
  2. Try a private or incognito window.
  3. Check your network. "Some shared or public networks (ex. schools/work/office) restrict access to certain services," Spotify notes.
  4. Use the desktop app if it still won't play.

One account plays on one device at a time, Spotify says. So playing somewhere else will stop the web player.

How do you fix "Playback of protected content is not enabled"?

Your browser is blocking the copy protection Spotify needs. Spotify says turning it on "requires no download and doesn't compromise your online security."

  • Chrome: type chrome://settings/content in the address bar, click open.spotify.com, scroll to Protected content IDs and pick Allow.
  • Firefox: click Enable DRM in the yellow bar. No bar? Type about:preferences#content and switch on Play DRM under DRM content.
  • Edge: N editions of Windows 10 need Microsoft's Media Feature Pack first.

What can't you do in the web player?

Downloads aren't part of it. Spotify's offline help only gives steps for its mobile, tablet and desktop apps. Premium downloads "as many as 10,000 tracks on each of up to 5 different devices" there.

You can't pick a sound quality, either, and lossless sound stays in the apps. Search, your library and your queue are all there. Spotify's keyboard shortcuts work in the web player, too.

Want to listen with friends? Spotify Jam lets several people add to one queue.

How do you log out of the Spotify web player?

Click your profile picture at the top and select Log out. The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl-Shift-W on Windows and Cmd-Shift-W on a Mac.

Left it logged in on a shared computer? Use Sign out everywhere on your Spotify account page. It logs you out of the "mobile, tablet, web player and desktop at once," Spotify says. Speakers, game consoles and TVs need their own Remove Access step.
