TikTok Stories: How to Post, Who Sees Them
TikTok Stories last 24 hours. How to post one, who can see it on public and private accounts, who knows you viewed it, Flip Stories and AI Alive.
TikTok Stories are photos or videos that stay up for 24 hours. TikTok's support page says Stories are "available to watch for 24 hours," as a web search showed it. You post one from the Story Camera, which opens from the blue "+" at the top of your Inbox or Profile page. People can then find it in their For You and Following feeds and on your profile.
We read TikTok's Newsroom posts on Stories on October 24, 2026. TikTok's support pages load in a way our reader can't open, so their lines come from a web search, labeled as such.
About 90,500 people search "tiktok stories" each month.
How do you post a TikTok Story?
- Open the Story Camera. Tap the blue "+" at the top of your Inbox page or Profile page. You can also tap "+" on the Create page and switch to Story.
- Take or choose your photo or video.
- Pick your audience. Tap Settings on the preview screen and choose who can watch.
- Post it. It disappears after 24 hours.
Changed your mind about the audience? Open the Story, tap Share, then Settings, and choose again, TikTok's support page says, as a web search showed it.
Who can see your TikTok Story?
That depends on whether your account's public or private.
| Your account | Who you can show a Story to |
|---|---|
| Public | Everyone (on or off TikTok), Friends, or Only you |
| Private | Followers, Friends, or Only you |
TikTok Support, "Video visibility," as a web search showed it on October 24, 2026.
On TikTok, Friends means followers you follow back. A private account is its own filter. "If you switch to a private account you can approve or deny follower requests, and only users you've approved as followers can see your content," TikTok's Newsroom explains. Our guide to making your TikTok private walks through it.
Can people see that you viewed their Story?
Yes. TikTok's support page says people can see you viewed their Story even if your account is private or your profile view history is turned off, according to a web search of that page.
That's different from profile views. TikTok only shows profile views from accounts that have that setting on, and only for the past 30 days. Our page on TikTok profile views explains the setting.
What are Flip Stories?
It's a Story with a second side. TikTok introduced Flip Story on October 1, 2024, as "a new feature that allows creators to add a second side to every story that can be unlocked with a flip."
- How it works: viewers press "Hold to Flip" to reveal the hidden side for a few seconds.
- What you can use: "Flip Stories support only image uploads."
- What you learn: "Creators will be able to see a separate list of viewers for those that unveiled the second side."
TikTok pitched it for before-and-after photos, announcements and sneak peeks. Billie Eilish used one to tease her tour.
What is TikTok AI Alive?
It's a tool that turns a photo into a short video inside Stories. TikTok launched it on May 13, 2025, calling it its "first AI-driven image-to-video creation feature." It's "Available exclusively within TikTok's Story Camera."
To use it, open the Story Camera, choose a single photo from your Story Album, and tap the AI Alive icon in the toolbar on the right. TikTok says moderation checks the photo, the AI prompt and the finished video before anyone sees it.
| Date | Stories update |
|---|---|
| October 1, 2024 | Flip Story: a hidden second side, images only |
| May 13, 2025 | AI Alive: photos turned into videos in the Story Camera |

When did TikTok Stories launch?
Guides don't agree. A web search on October 24, 2026, turned up guides saying late 2021, others saying March 2022, and others saying 2021 to 2022. We couldn't find a TikTok post that dates it, so we won't pick one.
