On the login screen, tap "Forgot your password?" and reset it by email or text, or use accounts.snapchat.com. Snapchat asks for a password "that is at least 8 characters in length," without your name, username, phone number or birthday.

We read Snapchat's support pages on changing and resetting your password and on account access on October 23, 2026.

"How to change snapchat password" gets about 9,900 searches a month, and "how to reset snapchat password" another 9,900.

How do you change your Snapchat password?

Snapchat's support site gives the in-app steps:

  1. "Open My Account"
  2. "Tap the gear icon ⚙️ to open Settings"
  3. "Tap 'Password'"
  4. "Follow the directions on the screen to change your password"

You can do it on the web too. Snapchat says to "Sign into your Snapchat account using your username or email," then "Enter the verification code sent to you by Snapchat," and follow the steps. Either way, you'll need to be logged in and know your current password.

On the web, Snapchat says to visit the Accounts Portal, "Enter the phone number or email associated with your Snapchat account," and "Click 'Forgot Password'." In the app, tap "Forgot your password?" and pick email or SMS. With email, "You should receive a password reset link." With a text, you "Enter the verification code and select 'Continue' to log in," then update your password in Settings.

What should your new password look like?

Snapchat's rule is "at least 8 characters," with none of your personal details. "It is best to include a mix of numbers, symbols and/or capital and lowercase letters," it adds. And keep it to yourself. Snapchat says it never needs your password: "A Snapchat representative will never ask you for your password. We don't need it to help you."

That matters for growth services too. Any app or site that asks for your Snapchat password puts the account at risk.

What if you can't reach your email or phone number?

This is the hard case, and Snapchat is firm about it. "For security reasons, Snapchat Support cannot send you a password reset if you don't have access to the phone number or email associated with your Snapchat account," its support site says. "We can't update your email or phone number for you, either."

Two-factor login adds one more step. "If you have Login Verification enabled, you will need both a Verification (or Recovery) Code and your password to log in," Snapchat says, and "We do not offer support for lost Recovery Codes." So save your recovery code somewhere safe before you need it.

What if your Snapchat account was hacked or locked?

If someone else got in, Snapchat's first step is to "Change your password to regain control of your account." Then "Make sure the correct email address and mobile number are associated with your account in Snapchat Settings." If that fails, Snapchat's support page links a contact form.

Locks work differently. A temporary lock for "unauthorized third-party app or plugin use (Wicked, IOTA, etc)" ends on its own, and Snapchat says to remove those apps before logging back in. For other temporary locks, it says to "wait 48 hours, then try logging in again." A permanent lock means Snapchat "detected some activity that violates our Community Guidelines or Terms of Service," though "Some permanently locked accounts may be eligible for an appeal" in the app.
