Should I Buy Followers for a New Instagram Account?

A new account starts near zero, and a bought batch raises the number on your profile. That number does two real things: it reads as social proof, and it can unlock features that Instagram gates by follower count. It doesn't move what Instagram ranks on. "The top three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends," Instagram's Adam Mosseri said in January 2025. We sell followers, so weigh this the way you'd weigh any seller.

Trial reels go "to non-followers first," Meta said in December 2024, which makes them a way for a new account to test ideas on strangers. LIVE got its 1,000-follower rule in August 2025, as TechCrunch reported. What doesn't a bought count do?
It doesn't add the signals Instagram ranks on. Mosseri told creators to watch "average watch time, likes per reach, and sends per reach," and a follower count isn't in that list.
It can pull your engagement rate down. Say a post gets 30 likes on an account with 300 followers, which is 10%. Add 1,000 followers who don't engage and the same 30 likes is about 2.3%. Brands that check engagement rate will see that number.
It can shrink later. Instagram's guidelines ask users not to artificially collect followers. Its clean-ups have moved counts before: in 2014, "Justin Bieber lost 3.5 million fans, or 15 percent of his total," The New York Times reported. In 2018 Instagram began removing activity from third-party apps, and in May 2026 Meta described a "routine process to remove inactive accounts." Is it different for a business account?
Yes, in the US. The FTC's rule of August 14, 2024 "prohibits anyone from selling or buying fake indicators of social media influence," in the agency's words. It applies when the buyer knew or should have known the followers were fake and used them to misrepresent influence "for a commercial purpose," the FTC says. Penalties go up to $53,088 per violation. How do you get followers on a new Instagram account?
- Start with people who know you. Friends, customers and your other profiles are the fastest first followers you'll get.
- Use trial reels once you're eligible. They put a reel in front of people who don't follow you yet.

- Make posts people send. Sends are one of Mosseri's three signals, and a tip or a find someone forwards does more for reach than a follower count.
